Why deleting .ft directories on running Domino servers is a bad idea

On unix or linux servers, deleting .ft directories while Domino is running can cause problems.

In some cases, Domino is still accessing already deleted files, which will prohibit fulltext index rebuild and lead to error messages like this:

Error full text indexing document NT00000000 .......
(rc=268) File is in use by another program

To solve this:

  1. Shutdown server
  2. Delete the affected .ft directory
  3. Restart Domino server
  4. Rebuild fulltext index

One Response to Why deleting .ft directories on running Domino servers is a bad idea

  1. Ronny De Groof says:

When you delete a .ft folder, the server will just recreate it because the database properties’ search tab says it has a ft index. So the best way to get rid of .ft folders (with the server running) is to delete the ft index from the search tab in the database properties.
